International Margarita Day at El Camion with support from Tequila Calle 23 and Mezcal Del Maguey

In celebration of International Margarita Day, a whole day dedicated to honour the classic Margarita cocktail, we have decided to make our own rendition with a slight twist… why mess with a classic! Our version is called the Smoky Margarita and you can get it for £5 ALL DAY on Thursday 22nd February. It’s made using Tequila Calle 23 Blanco, triple sec, freshly squeezed lime juice, with just a hint of Del Maguey Mezcal Vida.

The main ingredient in Margaritas is tequila, a Mexican spirit made from the agave plant. If you’re not familiar, agave plants are a type of succulent that can only be used when it nears the end of its life, which is usually 5 to 10 years after being planted. To be legally called a tequila it must be made in Mexico; after harvesting, the agave plants have to be cooked, then crushed to extract the sugar rich juices, the juices are then fermented and it must be double distilled. Tequila comes in blanco (unaged), reposado (rested), añejo (aged) and extra añejo (you get the drift)…

Tequila Calle 23 is the brainchild of French born Sophie Decobecq; all her tequilas are 100% agave, which means all the sugars used in the production of the tequila comes from the agave plants. Out of the Calle 23 range we have chosen the blanco as it makes a great Margarita, with a spicy, citrusy, fresh agave flavour. This highland tequila is made in the town of San Pancho, using blue agaves grown in the region. At 40% abv, it’s a Margaritas best friend.

Mezcal Del Maguey Vida, is a rediscovery treasure, that Taos based artist Ron Cooper stumbled over nearly 27 years ago. It’s made in the small village of San Luis Del Rio by Paciano Cruz Nolasco and his son Marcos. Del Maguey Vida is made from Espadín agaves, the most common agave used in Oaxaca, using traditional practices: the agave is earth roasted, crushed by molinas and fermented naturally with airborne yeast before it is distilled in small copper stills. The flavour is much more complex, which a slight earthiness to it: it packs a mighty 42% abv, so we just use a little to give the Margarita that hint of smoke.

SO, JOIN US THIS THURSDAY FOR £5 SMOKY MARGARITAS TO CELEBRATE THE COCKTAIL THAT HAS BROUGHT SO MUCH HAPPINESS TO US ALL.

Resident DJ: Bamboo

Along with the cocktails, the bar team and the general legendary-ness of our basement bar, it’s the music that makes The Pink Chihuahua so goddamn awesome. Our resident DJs play a huge hand in creating the atmosphere and, because of their unearthly, near-psychic skills, they always know exactly what we’re going to want to hear on any night of the week.

For those who regularly come down to see us on a Friday night, you’ll be familiar with our long-time Friday resident, Bamboo.

Bamboo DJ

Flying the banner for the best in disco, funk, hip hop and house classics, she’ll often take you on a bit of a time travel in the time it takes you to drink your Tommy’s Margarita. From 60s ska to 90s R&B – and everything in between – you’ll get old school house and garage weaved between new age psychedelic dance. When there’s a contagious groove pulsing through the Pink Chihuahua, you’ll know that its Bamboo at the helm.

Check out her Soundcloud here – and we’ll see you on Friday!

The soundtrack to The Pink Chihuahua!

What more to get you in the mood for sunshine, margaritas and dancing late into the night than a soundtrack of latin beats?

Our DJ, Alex, has put put together a mix that represents the vibe of the Pink Chihuahua bar. We don’t know what it says to you, but it says to us… ‘CRACK OPEN THE TEQUILA!’

Enjoy!

image

The new menu is based on the Dick and Jane books, the old children’s series, and pays homage, in a small way, to  our dear friend, Dick Bradsell.

image

If you love tequila, we’ve got a wonderful selection of our favourite tequila cocktails…

imageAnd you’ll also find a few of Dick’s most famous creations.

Then, of course, there are the drinks that we love making and drinking – even though they might be a bit… wanky.

Finally, if you’re here for the tequila, we’ve got a couple of pages dedicated to the ones we like best. We’ve also got a page of different mezcals if you’re feeling smoky and mysterious.

This is just a small peek into what we’ve got going on, so come and discover the rest for yourselves. So far, the Mezcal Sazerac has got the cocktail aficionados a little excited – why not start there if you’re looking for an exciting jumping off point?

The Fancy Boiler Maker: An introduction

First off, what the H is a Boilermaker?

If you’ve ever been to the States, you might be familiar with the old shot and a chaser – typically a whisky and a beer. Well, that, friends, is actually called a Boilermaker.

Our one, however, is Fancy. That’s because it’s a gorgeous shot of Olmeca Altos Blanco Tequila served with a Michelada (more info on one of those here) made with the famous Mexican beer, Pacifico.

Down the shot, chase it with the Michelada for a punchy kickstart to the eve, or sip on both alternately for the perfect summer refresher.

You’ll find the Fancy Boiler Maker in the Wanky Bartender Drinks section of our new menu and it’s just £5 throughout July.

£5 Cocktail: The Toreador!

Before the Margarita became the tequila-sipper’s drink of choice, another boozy tipple was making a name for itself among agave aficionados. This, friends, was THE TOREADOR!

image

First mentioned way back in 1937 in the ‘Cafe Royal Cocktail Book’, this delicious concoction of Reposado Tequila, Apricot Brandy and freshly squeezed lime juice predates the margarita’s first appearance in the history books by sixteen years.

Our new head barman Will Hawes is bringing this awesome cocktail back as the first of our £5 monthly specials. He follows Simon Difford’s classic recipe:

2 shots of Reposado Tequila (100% agave!)
1 shot of Apricot Brandy
1 shot of freshly squeezed lime juice

Enjoy now at El Camion for just five round shiny ones!

Festive Memories!

January can be a weird month for some of us: we all feel poor, we all feel fat and we are all on a month-long hangover from December partying. And some of us, God forbid, are having a SOBER month (Dry January – ick) and the December debauchery is a distant memory.

As we use January as a time to ‘take stock’ and think about what the hell we’re going to do with a brand new year, we thought we’d look back at some pics of party season. Ah, there it is. Now we remember!

Now, we hope you feel suitably inspired again to fall off the wagon. See you shortly!

Stuff We’ve Got Goin’ On

We can almost hear the sleigh bells ringing! The temperature has dropped, the nights are at their darkest – tis most definitely the season for all things food, for all things drink and for all things PARTY.

What’s been going on with us? Well, we’ve just been celebrating Thanksgiving in honour of our old muckers from across the pond and our chef created a special dish of Turkey Enchiladas: strips of marinated turkey wrapped in our thin tortillas, slathered in traditional green enchilada sauce and served with puréed black beans – yum! It might just have to last longer than Thanksgiving did…

image image

Watch out for more special dishes as Christmas approaches. Chef is feeling creative AND festive so expect some mouthwatering offerings starring turkey, cranberries, rich spices and warming treats.

And it’s not just the kitchen getting into the spirit of things! The bar team are currently working on a Christmas cocktail to make merry with. They’re a talented and competitive bunch so no doubt there will be an in-house cocktail competition to see who’s creation is the most palatable come Yuletide. Got some ideas? Send them our way!

image

We’ve also got some awesome new tequilas and mezcals in, including Tequila Cabeza and San Cosme mezcal, so if you’re looking for a tipple to warm you from the inside, just ask our team what they recommend!

Membership at the Pink Chihuahua!

We all know what the hottest ticket in town is – everyone wants to get their greasy mitts on one. But we don’t give them to just anyone, and that’s why anyone who’s anyone really wants one and sometimes can’t get one… We’re talking about a Pink Chihuahua Membership card, obvs!

image

Our legendary little basement bar on Brewer Street, The Pink Chihuahua, has seen many, many things. It’s seen the King of Cocktails, Dick Bradsell, shake up his crazy concoctions and create new ones for the cocktail history books, it’s seen the bartenders of Soho convene after hours and lose track of time one too many times and it’s seen many a birthday group dance on tables to The Cash Cows until the dawn. It’s a special little place.

image

Here’s the rub. We’ve got to keep it special. We can’t let any Tom, Dick or Harriet in – not until we get to know them, of course. The Pink Chihuahua also only has a capacity of 50 people, so there’s that too. So, we ask that if you’d like to become a member of The Pink Chihuahua (we’d LOVE you to become a member) please fill in the application form online and we’ll invite you in to say hey, how’s it going? We’ll then issue you with a membership card, which you may use to sign in one other person. If it’s more than that, they’ll have to become members too! If you’ve got a special occasion coming up and would like to book a table for a group of you, please email us at info@elcamion.co.uk.

You can apply to become a member here.

Remember, it is an application only.

We hope you can join us for Pink Chihuahua fun soon!
