Woohoo – today is International Coffee Day, and the time to express-o yourself and your love of coffee. And what better place than the actual home of the Espresso Martini!

Dick Bradsell's Espresso Martini Cocktail

Dick Bradsell’s Espresso Martini Cocktail

Yes, that’s right. At El Camion we’re famous for quite a few things – our hot sauce tolerance; being on the money when it comes to bashing a piñata; holding the record for stuffing thirteen Jaladas into our mouth in one go (as well as having the BEST late night Pink Chihuahua Mexican bar in Soho…)

But another thing that puts us firmly on the map is that our Awesome and Talented Head Bartender, Dick Bradsell, is the actual inventor of this iconic cocktail. While working at the Soho Brasserie in 1983, a young American model strolled in and asked for a drink that would ‘Wake her up, and then f*@k her up’. The much imitated-and-never-bettered Espresso Martini is what he put down in front of her. Apparently a bit of a messy working environment is to be thanked – the drinks station, being right next to the coffee machine, was covered in coffee grounds. And back then everyone was drinking vodka (none of this botanical gin faff for the eighties crowd), and this spirit makes the base.

So, if you’re a fan of this eye-opener of a drink, or want a chance to try it and see what all the fuss is about, then drop by to El Camion and give it a go. And we dare you to ask for it in the same way that the model did…
